This comedy drama is based on the incredible true story in which a ‘failed’ Dutch-Amercan football coach, Thomas Rongen (played by Michael Fassbender) is co-erced into taking on the team of American Samoa, one of the weakest teams in the world, as they face the 2014 World Cup qualifiers. So poor was their previous performance that the scoring of a single goal by the team would be considered a success! However, the film is about more than just football, and celebrates Polynesian culture. A sub-plot focuses on Saelua, the first openly trans-gender footballer to play in a World-cup qualifier. Saelua, and the actress playing her, Kaimana, are both Fa’afafine, i.e. members of the fluid gender community that is highly respected in Samoan society, an issue that is not fully understood by the new coach.
