The Old Oak is the final film to be made by veteran British film-director Ken Loach. Loach is known for his hard-hitting critical dramas that highlight social issues, and for his use of non-professional actors alongside professionals, which he believes adds realism to his films. He is one of only nine filmmakers to win the Palm d’Or award twice and also holds the record for most films entered into the main competition at Cannes, with fifteen films. The Old Oak was nominated for Outstanding British Film at the British Academy of Film Awards.

The film is set in the North of England in an area with high levels of unemployment and desperation among the local population following the earlier closure of the coal-mines. Tensions arise when there is an influx of Syrian refugees. The film tells how a local pub landlord and one of the refugees work together to bring the two disadvantaged and traumatised communities together.

“As with all Loach’s issue-led film-making …….. there is a clear, black-and-white moral framework. But there is also a plea for open-hearted compassion, even for bilious racists. The final message of hope is resolutely upbeat and desperately needed” (The Guardian). “it is a gritty, gruelling drama and a paean to the labour movement, to community spirit and working-class pride” (Empire Online).
