In honour of the late lamented Sean Connery, this is the film for which he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
Based on real-life events in 1930 Chicago, the film tells the story of the team put together by Eliot Ness, the prohibition agent tasked with putting an end to the activities of gangster Al Capone. After initial setbacks the team begin to have some success. There is plenty of drama, in particular the so-called ‘stairway scene’ in Union station near the end of the film which has viewers on the edge of their seats. The film is also full of great period details that capture the prohibition era.
In addition to Sean Connery’s awards as best supporting actor, Ennio Morricone also won a BAFTA and a Grammy award for the film score.
